Health authorities are desperately trying to track down a man with a virulent strain of drug-resistant tuberculosis after he escaped from a hospital in Taichung Wednesday. The Centers for Disease Control released the man’s details on Friday and called on the public to report any sightings of the man as soon as possible. Health authorities also warned the public not to get too close to the man as his medication wore off Friday and he is thought to be highly contagious. ##
Lee Jhen-jhu is the first person to have his identity made public by the Centers for Disease Control for repeatedly refusing treatment for tuberculosis.

He is a male, 56 years of age, 161 cm tall and weighs 67 kilograms. Because he has stopped taking his medication, his level of infectiousness will rise creating a risk to others.
In July last year, Lee caused a major storm when he defied a travel ban to go on vacation to China while infected with a highly infectious type of drug-resistant tuberculosis. After a costly manhunt, he was tracked down and repatriated to Taiwan for treatment. Since then, he has been held forcibly in a Taichung hospital undergoing treatment. But with his condition showing little sign of improving, Lee escaped from the hospital two days ago to avoid an operation to remove the most severely infected parts of his lungs.

He broke an alarm in the system meant to prevent him from escaping and so it didn’t go off when he escaped through an emergency exit, said Lee Ming-hui, the deputy superintendent of Taichung Hospital.
Lee’s medication wore off Friday and the Centers for Disease Control called on members of the public to avoid contact with him, especially in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces. The phone number to report Lee’s whereabouts to the Centers for Disease Control is 1922. Members of the public can also provide information to any Department of Health agency.
