MEXICO CITY (Dow Jones)--Marriott International Inc. (MAR) said Monday it plans to open five new hotels in Mexico next year, in addition to the 11 it currently operates.
Marriott executives visited the Caribbean resort of Cancun, where the company has reopened its two hotels that were severely damaged last year by Hurricane Wilma.
In a press release, the company said the eight-month renovation of the JW Marriott and CasaMagna Marriott cost $100 million.
Hurricane Wilma hit Cancun last October, putting most of the resort's 27,000 hotel rooms out of operation. Some used the opportunity to make improvements as well as repairs, taking longer to return to service.
